George Kalmar was born in Komarno, Slovakia. He immigrated to the United States as a child with his family in 1965. At age 14, and then again at 15, he was awarded two consecutive gold medals in the city-wide art competition in Philadelphia. These awards launched his sculpting career. In 1969 he enrolled at Temple University where he combined his study of fine art with his interest in English literature. In 1973, he moved to Bloomington, Indiana where he began his graduate work at Indiana University, and was first exposed to work in stone.

In 1983 he moved to Los Angeles. Here his work begun to focus on plaster and metal work. Ultimately his continuing interest in combining man-made with natural materials culminated in his more numerous pieces using polished aluminum and walnut. From 2004 to 2014 he was represented by the Artcore Gallery in Los Angeles. In these years his work was shown world-wide including the most recent major exhibitions in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Bangkok, and Seul.
